Topic: The Science and Ethics of Adult Stem Cell Therapies: Hope or Hype?
Adult mesenchymal stem cells are plentiful in tissues such as fat and bone marrow. Additionally, they could be harvested from otherwise discarded umbilical cord and placenta after standard live births. While these cells have a biologic activity that can be useful for many regenerative medicine therapies, the use of these therapies is often shrouded in unjustified claims of efficacy.
This lecture explores the biology of adult mesenchymal stem cells, regulatory issues, ethical quandaries that have arisen, and how this impacts the doctor – patient relationship.
